Broken Wheat Upma

Broken Wheat Upma is a delicious and healthy dish you can serve for breakfast or dinner. It is easy to prepare and an apt meal for diabetic patients. It is nutritious with the whole grain, lots of vegetables and less oil. Serve this upma with chutney or sambar or just pickle and curd. It is hearty and wholesome.


  • Broken wheat – 1 cup
  • Carrot – 1
  • Potato – 1
  • Onion – 1
  • Green chili – 1
  • Curry leaves – 5
  • Ghee – 1 tsp
  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste

Method of Preparation:

Wash carrot, potato and onion. Chop them into small cubes.

Boil 3 cups of water in a separate pan.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter. Add urad dal and fry until it becomes golden brown. Add onions and fry until it becomes translucent for about 3 minutes. Add all the vegetables and saute for 5 minutes over low heat.

Add the broken wheat and fry it for 5 minutes. Add  2.5 cups of boiling water and salt, mix well.  Cover it with a lid  vegetables and wheat are fully cooked

Turn off the stove. Add ghee, curry leaves and mix well. Upma is ready.
